HOTSPOTS: earth's biologically richest and most endangered terrestrial ecoregions
The richly illustrated book is the result of collaboration between Conservation International, the Mexican conservation organization Agrupación Sierra Madre and the cement company CEMEX. An introductory chapter outlines the concept of hotspots as regions with the greatest concentrations of life forms and those at greatest risk of extinction, particularly because of endemism, and discusses global biodiversity conservation. A total of 25 hotspots were identified within terrestrial ecoregions, mainly tropical and Mediterranean. Originally covering 11.8% of the land surface, only approx. 12% of that area (2 142 839 km2) remains intact; this area supports 131 399 endemic vascular plant species (43.8% of the world's total) and 9681 endemic non-fish vertebrates (35.5% of global total). For each of the hotspots, an overview of the region, diversity of habitats and global importance is followed by sections discussing flagship species, threats and conservation. There is no index.
