Twelve Minutes to Disaster and Other Stories
Tony joined Paddy and Mark on the bank, along with the cows and the calf. One of the cooks hurried back to his fire and came back with three tin mugs on a string and an enamel jug of the always-ready camp-tea, to offer a restoring drink.
It was while they were enjoying the tea that Tony suddenly asked: 'Mark, where'd you get the shiners?'
'Shiners?' Mark said, puzzled. 'What do you mean?'
'You've got two lovely black eyes,' one of the cooks chuckled. 'Looks like you've been havin' a go at somebody an' come off worst. How'd the other fellow get on?'
Mark glowered for a moment, then snapped, 'I don't know how much a good calf is worth, but that's what I paid for a cleanskin-two black eyes. Paddy hit me without warning; I'd just put our stamp on the calf there', and he turned to point to where the five cows and the calf were stand- ing dejectedly, breathing hard after the long swim.
